The Strategic Case for a Pilot Franchise

B2.jpg
If you’re asking, “What is a pilot franchise?” or searching for “Why do I need to launch a pilot franchise”, you’re already looking into franchise, and you already have a successful business.

You may be at the point where you feel ready to explore franchising
This article provides some basic insights into franchising your business. We hope you find this helpful.

Leading industry bodies including the British Franchise Association (BFA) and the International Franchise Association (IFA) consistently reinforce one principle: sustainable franchise growth is build on proven replication, not theory.

A pilot franchise is the controlled transition of your business from founder-dependent to system-dependent it demonstrates that:
  • The model works in a different location or territory
  • Performance is not reliant on the founder’s daily presence
  • Systems, training and support can be transferred, it’s replicable
  • Unit economics (the financial for both franchisor and franchisee) remain viable once franchise fees, royalties and other costs a franchisee may need to pay are layered in.
Ethical franchising requires a proven, profitable and transferable model.

Where you have successfully launched multiple units or territories under your company owned brand, there may be merits in operating one of those as a pilot but there are conditions to truly prove out the ‘hands off concept’ and build in the additional cost a franchisee will incur. It still requires an ethical approach and performance metrics, including financials, that are anchored in the reality of franchising and unit model economics.

5 signs your business may be suited to franchising

1.Strong consistent unit economics. Your margins are healthy, predictable and repeatable. You understand breakeven points with clarity.

2.Process Already Exits (Even Informally). You find yourself saying ‘this is how we do it’. There are repeatable steps that could be documented in Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

3.Demand is not location dependent. Customers value the brand, proposition and outcome. It’s not just anchored to you personally.

4.Your receiving replication signals. People ask about your model, want to partner with you, ask if you are opening in other areas.

5.The business works without you being present. You can step away and performance doesn’t collapse. Services can still be delivered.
